It seems to me that there is nothing wrong with a driver wanting to respect his or her religion. I see no reason that a compromise cannot occur. If a taxi driver, for religious reasons, wishes not to take a customer because that customer has been drinking or has liquor on his or her person then a taxi company should be prepared to provide another taxi and driver willing to take that customer. I believe such a policy would fall within the domain of reasonable accommodation on religious grounds. Furthermore, a taxi company should know the routes on that it is likely that customers will have drinked liquor or have liquor on them such as night clubs, airports, etc and ensure that the drivers assigned to these routes do not object to having customers who have been drinking liquor or have it on them. Another measure that could be taken is a sticker system be developed by the taxi industry/companies: the sticker is placed on the window of taxi's that do not accept customers that have been drinking liquor or may have liquor on them so that customers know before they try to get a ride. At saying, this the sticker system should be used with another program such as assigning drivers that do not object to liquor to routes that they are likely to have customers that have been drinking liquor or have it on their person. All drivers should feel they have the right to refuse a customer if they believe that customer's intoxication is a physical danger on the road to the driver.
I must admit that I do not know anything about these religious believes. I would hope that the above compromise is suited to these religious believes. The only concern I can see developing is if the religious belief can be taken to say that even calling on a other taxi for a customer that has been drinking liquor or have liquor on them is offensive. The only response I have to this is that when we live in a multicultural society that is composed of various cultures that believe and view things in different ways then we need to learn tolerate each other's different ways. This may mean if there is a life style that is offensive to some then those that find it offensive will agree to let those living that lifestyle live it but prey for those that live it not to take part in that life style.
