Eating and Self-image Disorders

Eating disorders are better to be referred to as self-image disorders. They can arise for various reasons: genes, teasing, away to exercise control (particularly in children and adolescents) at stressful times, media images, etc. I am glad too see that attention is finally being paid towards these disorders in relation to males. The result in the past has been that males have gone unnoticed who have suffered.

A lot of discussion of late has been around the impact of the media’s role in causing/increasing the occurrence of these disorders. The thing is there have probably always been signals from media (since media has been around) of how to look. Certainly, different generations (even before media) have their standards of what is attractive: from hats and hair to body-type. I think the difference is where in the past where fashion and muscle magazines were there if somebody wished to look at them, nowadays images are much more present and have much more less diversity of what is considered to be attractive.

From fashion magazines to shows on television the message is clear, attractiveness is defined for males as being somewhat tall (but not the height of a basketball player), slim and toned, and perfect skin (that only make-up can achieve—certainly no acme which is not covered-up). In fact, the professional beach-bully has been squeezed out of the market: the nerd has no one to stand-up to as the bully that is left is not the hulk that he use to be. Attractiveness for females is defined as supermodel, skinny otherwise known as the Barbie image as well as perfect skin (again that only can be achieved by make-up).

hi, just-in-case anyone out there is wondering how to use the labels function let me see if I can explain how I did it. In the section of the post called 'labels' which is located at the bottom right of the post write a phrase(s) and separate each phrase with a comma and then repeat that phrase in each label section of each posts you wish to link together. All posts with the same phrase in the label section should come-up together once the phrase is clicked-upon by the mouse (i.e., if you want three posts to come-up together all three must have the same labels, which means each post will have three labels). You will also need to at the least to allow your blog views to read comments (which can be done through post options located to the bottom left of your post, although you do not have to set it so they can leave comments). After this click on publish post.
